Frequently Asked Questions

Thanks for your interest in Troop 967! Here are some questions that new Scouts often have along with brief answers to help familiarize yourself with us.

Q: What is the purpose behind the Boy Scouts of America?
A: The troop is ideally a boy-led organization.  The adult leaders are resources that the boy leaders should draw from to plan and perform the troop’s activities.  We ask parents and prospective new Scouts to contact the Scoutmaster, Mr. Michael Allen, to discuss their interest. We recommend that you visit us during our regular meeting time which is Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. in the basement of the Havre de Grace United Methodist Church.

A: Boys who have completed fifth grade or had their 11th birthday are eligible until their 18th birthday.  Scouts must accept and adhere to the principles of Scout oath and the Scout law.

Q:
What must I do to join?
A: Joining requires that new Scouts fill out an application form which can be obtained from the Scoutmaster.  Upon joining, Scouts are expected to be reasonably regular in their participation and to keep their dues paid to remain in good standing.  We understand and accept a few periodic conflicts.

Q: What does it cost?
A: Dues are $52 per year, but are collected in weekly installments ($1 per week). Our monthly outings will vary in cost from nothing to $200 depending upon the nature, location, and duration of the outing.  The troop conducts fund-raisers to help Scouts defray these costs.  Additionally, the troop and our church sponsor can offer aid on a case-by-case basis.  Cost should never exclude a Scout from joining or participating in activities.

Q:
What kind of activities do you conduct?
A: Each year is different.  We conduct an annual planning conference in January to map out the coming year’s events.  Scouts provide their input to the troop committee for final decisions.  Please see our calendar of events for this year’s agenda.

A: The benefits of Scouting can last a lifetime.  From the momentary enjoyment of an activity to the skills that are cultivated in the process, from the values that are instilled to the recognition that is received with achievements, from the friendships that are made to the places that are visited, from the competition at a camporee to the encouragement of an instructor, Scouting is still one of the most rewarding things a boy can do.  However, like most things, Scouting’s benefits are linked to the effort that a Scout himself gives. Troop 967's commitment is to help boys achieve goals that they set and to have fun in the process!
